Business Background and Environment
The city of Addis Ababa as headquarter of African Union, Economic
Commission for Africa, and the seat for many international organizations
and diplomatic missions is noted for its potential to be a hotbed
for the information and media market. Among these is the development
of quality entertainment facilities and local productions of arts,
films, theatres and modern multimedia facilities.
Advances in science, technology and globalization in recent years
have led to economic, social, cultural, political and geopolitical
transformation on a global scale.
Digital media is at the core of these phenomena. This has led to
the growth of global networks that have changed businesses and markets,
creating new paradigms and enable new information and knowledge
based economy. With reduction of cost and speed of delivery across
the globe, traditional ways are being transformed by technology,
affecting all areas of social, political and economic life.
The traditional way of preserving identity through storytelling,
songs and the written paper world has given way to film, television,
animation and digital representation. This transformation together
with advances in the communication technology has created a new
"global culture" highly dominated by the ones with the
knowledge and capacity of creating, distributing and rapidly disseminating
this information through technological means. As a result, most
developing countries including Ethiopia are sustaining a cultural
void that is begging to be filled by companies like ours.
Even though the recent developments in building infrastructure and
capacity in the telecommunication arena have advanced, this needs
to be complimented by content, rich local capacity and resource
development. We have identified these gaps and are committed to
establish a highly energized world class company.
The business model even though new to the country, is currently
flourishing in the various forms of content presentation worldwide.
Given a young market and an expected explosion of millions and millions
of direct and indirect users (Both active and passive), the projected
demand for our products and services is almost unlimited.
The market is very attractive due to almost non existence of local
quality content. Cinema infrastructure, data and documentation centers.
Contents that do represent and enrich indigenous culture without
erosion and distortion are very much lacking.
We believe that we have to build a strong presence in the new world
of technology and cyberspace representing our heritage and multimedia
aggregation, to be able to retain and pass our history and unique
identity to the next generation.
Ethiopia is a country with rich and diversified local culture that
is not yet fully documented or explored or recorded. This culture
is complemented by a wide variety of flora and fauna. Development
of this potential by entertainment industry and other industries
is very small with some of them coming very recently.
Content is produced and expressions are developed to be distributed
at a faster pace as technology has enabled such development at the
grass roots level. Realizing these facts, we have taken the initiative
to introduce and develop such a capability as a business on a large
scale.
GEBBETTA plans to lead in this sector and dominate the market. It
is our conviction that the local media and content we produce could
create the linkage for this opportunity.
The main competitive advantage of GEBBETTA is that all of its services
and facilities are self complimentary. This strategy has dual advantages
whereby the entertainment capability and underlying use of internal
technology makes us efficient.
The integrated approach of having an indigenous information technology
business unit that will be involved in local content, capacity and
resource developments will give a distinct competitive advantage
to GEBBETTA.
